May Day 2023

18 April 2023

Union members have been fighting for and winning improvements to our working conditions for a long time.

In 1856, stonemasons in Melbourne and Sydney  won the right to an 8-hour day. Setting a new standard around the world.

The following year, in 1886 up to half a million workers in the United States took strike action on May 1 for the 8-hour day.

In 1891, there was a shearer's strike in Australia, and the first Australian May Day protest.

Since then, union members right around the world have celebrated our movement and our history every year on May 1.
